Ever-Changing Ecology: Succession Science

The natural world is never static - the only constant factor is change! Evaluate FortWhyte’s ecological landscape in several stages of forest succession- from recently disturbed grassland to mature oak forest. Use a small sample area to investigate soil, plants and animal communities, and learn how fire is not always a negative thing. Find out how hard trees work to survive with a game of tree tag to cap off your visit.

Mother Nature has its own version of ’Surviror’; but when you lose, you get kicked out of existence rather than off the island. Learn how both physical and behavioural adaptations allow animals and plants to survive. Play the role of a bird and decide what beak would be best for you. Dipnet for marsh critters and discover how they are adapted to their habitat (if weather permits).

Experiment with water filtration and purification systems and see if you can clean our swamp water. Learn how to do your part to protect our water resources.
