Many People—One Pillar, Enriching the Volunteer Experience

Oct 01, 2009

We are leading the way this fall with a creative approach to volunteer engagement, that will define new roles, in new areas with broader levels of responsibility. While FortWhyte has built a reputation in the voluntary sector for its variety of volunteer opportunities at all operational levels, we are committed to striving for yet another level of engagement ensuring potential volunteers from all walks of life can find a sense of purpose and fulfilment here. Motivators such as choice, positive working environment, learning opportunities and recognition will enrich the overall volunteer experience as never before.

“HUMAN. NATURE.” is FortWhyte Alive’s corporate positioning line that speaks to the three fundamental cornerstones of our mission to promote sustainable living. Taking into account the common threads of human nature, FortWhyte strives everyday to convey the importance of a healthy natural environment to individuals, young and old.

We recognize that the human species is an integral part of nature, and that over the last century, mankind has become the major ecological force within our own home ranges and cumulatively, the entire planet. The FortWhyte of today, with its expanded natural, built, and intellectual riches, has both the privilege and responsibility to invest them as effectively as possible to achieve a sustainable future for those who follow. And because FortWhyte’s importance and potential has never been greater at this critical juncture in human history, our Board of Trustees and Senior Staff have embarked upon a strategic planning process aimed at achieving innovative renewal and operational sustainability over the long term.

One of the pillars of FortWhyte’s modus operandi will continue to be people engaging people ... a fluid formula of dedicated staff and volunteers working individually and shoulder to shoulder across a wide spectrum of operations ... allowing us to affect human nature and behaviour in as many people as possible. FortWhyte’s Volunteer Program is second to none, having provided a solid, invaluable platform for dynamic program growth and achievements over the past 40 years. So it should be no surprise that we plan to strengthen and lengthen that pillar further. Through innovative job design, recruitment, training and recognition approaches, and a can-do attitude, no operational stone will be left unturned for potential volunteer involvement, achievement and personal fulfillment. This strategic vision will revitalize volunteerism at FortWhyte Alive such that the program shines as a model of community engagement and representation for other not-for-profit organizations across the country.

Well established seasonal training opportunities will be enhanced further, beginning this fall with second-to-none professional development for both new and veteran volunteers. Information outlining these opportunities will be available from our website at www.fortwhyte.org/volunteering starting in early September. We pledge to invest in the success of all FortWhyte Volunteers by providing life-long learning for personal growth and development. All these initiatives serve to strengthen the volunteer pillar just as a fall recruitment campaign aims to lengthen it. The words “Connect. Contribute. Explore.” are tied to the campaign to underline the rewarding, intangible benefits of volunteering. Present volunteers bear testimony to a sense of connection, an opportunity to make a difference, and to explore latent personal interests and the natural world all at once. Ask anyone of the current 300 members of the FortWhyte Volunteer team. This fall, we invite you to renew yourself by joining the Volunteer Program and help FortWhyte in realizing its Vision: Changing how you see our world. Making a world of difference.
