By partnering with financial specialists, lawyers and other allied professionals, FortWhyte Alive can assist donors in making the most effective use of their charitable contribution. Most (but not all) planned gifts are deferred gifts such as bequests, life insurance policies, charitable remainder trusts, gifts of residual interest, etc. Planned gifts may also include outright gifts in the form of securities, real estate or other gifts. A planned gift does not need to be large. Any gift to FortWhyte, large or small, is needed and will make a difference.
Consider informing FortWhyte that you are planning a gift. This way, your generosity can be recognized immediately and we can provide you with specific opportunities for giving.
Establishing a Bequest in Your Will
Deferring your gift by making a personal legacy gift in your will is one of the simplest ways to express your enduring support to FortWhyte Alive. Your estate will receive a tax credit for the gift that could help reduce estate taxes owing.
Gift of Securities
Publicly-traded securities are the most common form of non-cash gift and currently receive increased tax benefits. The value of the gift will be the fair market value as determined at the time the gift is received.
Charitable Remainder Trusts
A charitable remainder trust is a deferred giving arrangement under which a donor transfers property (cash, securities or real estate) to a trustee. The donor retains the right to the income from the trust either for life or a specified term of years. Then, FortWhyte has irrevocable title to the assets when the donor dies.
Gifts of Personal Property
Canada Revenue Agency calls a gift of personal property a gift-in-kind, and defines it as: a gift of property other than cash such as capital property (including depreciable property) and personal-use property (including listed personal property). A gift in kind does not include a gift of services.
Life Insurance
Many donors have found life insurance to be a rewarding way of making a large future gift to FortWhyte, while providing tax credits that can be used now. Premiums that are paid on a donated life insurance policy are eligible for a charitable tax receipt. The payment of annual premiums is also a gift that generates an official receipt for income tax purposes. A tax receipt will be issued for the cash surrender value of the policy at the time of the donation.
Other types of planned gift include Charitable Gift Annuities, Gifts of Retirement Fund Accumulations and Gifts of Residual Interest.
Membership in the FortWhyte Society is open to anyone arranging a bequest to FortWhyte Alive or the FortWhyte Forever Endowment of $10,000 or more.
The Society is a dedicated group of supporters who want to ensure that generations to come will have the educational advantage to address the environmental challenges of the future, and that everyone in our community will have access to natural settings and facilities for learning, health and enjoyment.
The FortWhyte Society can be a way for donors to show their support, realize substantial tax savings and enjoy the benefits of Society membership. Whatever form their gift takes, donors have the satisfaction of knowing they have made an important commitment to the future of FortWhyte Alive.
