WAGxFWA: Watercolours and Wanderlust

 

Explore the artwork of botanical illustrator Linda Fairfield Stechesen and wander the woods to find the living versions of her illustrations on a FortWhyte Alive forage walk.

Spring is here and FortWhyte Alive has teamed up once again with the Winnipeg Art Gallery to bring you an amazing opportunity to learn about local plant life. On Saturday June 3 visit the Winnipeg Art Gallery and explore the intricate botanical illustrations of Linda Fairfield Stechesen and create your own botanical watercolour to take home. The following Saturday afternoon wander the fields and forests of FortWhyte Alive and learn about local flora with naturalist Katrina Froese. Let nature inspire you!

Opening Canoe Season

 

Join us at FortWhyte Alive as we say HELLO to paddle season! Our rowboats and canoes officially go in the water in time for May Long Weekend! As always, you can rent a canoe or rowboat for a half hour or full hour, and explore the lakes of FortWhyte.

Saturday, May 19  10am - 4pm
$8 for half hour, $12 for full hour

Canoes and Rowboats are available for rent at the Front Desk at FortWhyte Alive, any time starting May Long Weekend, until September Long Weekend! 

International Migratory Bird Day Celebration

 

As coined by National Geographic, 2018 is the Year of the Bird, and this is something we can get behind to celebrate! May 12, 2018 marks the centennial of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, which was an important piece of legislation that works towards saving birds’ lives. To celebrate, we are offering an exciting lineup of bird-themed fun!

Smartphone Photography Bird Walk
Join professional photographer Walter Potrebka on a 30 minute guided walk through the forests of FortWhyte Alive, as he teaches you about the tips and tricks to taking photos of some beautiful song birds

Bird Identification Walks
Join a FortWhyte Alive birding interpreter for a 30 minute guided walk, where they will help you identify different species and types of birds! Try looking at them closely through a pair of binoculars, and close your eyes to hear their beautiful songs.

Bird Craft
Join FortWhyte craft leaders as they guide you through constructing a bird feeding craft to take home, to help draw in different species of birds to your backyard!

All About Geese
Our Canada Goose expert will give you information on what the animal is currently up to, and what we can expect for the summer and fall ahead, in terms of migratory patterns, laying their eggs, goslings, food, and so much more!

Introduction to Bird Photography

 

 

 

 

Learn the basics of bird photography with professional photographer Walter Potrebka, of Walter Potrebka Photography. This photography workshop will teach you the basics of exposure, composition and focus, among other topics. Bring your own camera and lenses*, and head outside to snap some shots of the migrating birds of FortWhyte. After the photo session, you will be able to have your photos reviewed and critiqued by Walter, and he will be able to provide you with further tips and tricks to get the perfect shot.

*A long lense will work best for bird photography. Lens should be 300mm or bigger for great shots, however, all are welcome.

Spring Slush Stomp Challenge

Getting messy can be half the fun of being outdoors! Explore FortWhyte Alive with your family or friends, and stomp in muddy, slushy puddles along the way!

Snap some pictures of having fun in the mud and slush to be entered to win a great prize pack, including some handmade goods to clean you up! Post your favorite photo on instagram tagging #FortWhyteAliveSSC to enter!
