Gauntlet Glove Making Workshop

Stacy from Amber’s Leather Creations will guide you through the step-by-step process of creating your own beautiful pair of gauntlets. You will design and learn to make your own unique pair, including full instruction of sewing and beading techniques.

All information and supplies will be provided. Material packages will include the choice of coloured suede, choice of coloured rabbit fur, beads, beading needles, beading thread, glover needle, and specialty leather thread.

Introduction to Beekeeping

Join FortWhyte beekeeper Derek Micholson for this hands-on workshop to learn about the fascinating world of honey bees. 

Start the workshop off in the classroom learning about basic honey bee biology, beekeeping equipment, seasonal beekeeper responsibilities, and honey harvesting. The second part will be outside* visiting FortWhyte’s hard-working bees as they prepare to hunker down for a long winter. You will receive 1lb of FortWhyte honey included with the price of the workshop.

Introduction to Kayaking – Two Evenings – Basic Kayak Certification

Master the fundamentals of kayaking. This course is a must for every new kayaker hoping to get the most from their paddling experience. Paddle Canada’s kayaking program will teach you the basics, starting with equipment and moving on to the basic strokes and techniques you will need to kayak safely on flat water. Paddle Canada, as always, has thrown in a good measure of safety training so you will be confident but also know your limits.

Fees:

  • $149 per person

  • 8 Hours, split between 2 weekday evenings 5:30 pm – 9 :30 pm

General Information

These courses are designed to introduce you to the basics of paddling. In addition to safety training and equipment education, you will be taught the strokes and manoeuvres that will help you to enhance your on-water experience and improve your confidence. Registration for all paddling courses is done through WAV Paddling’s website.Canoeing and Kayaking are lifelong sports that are easily learned by all ages and most abilities. FortWhyte Alive is pleased to partner with WAV Paddling for the instruction of the 2019 paddling programs. WAV Paddling’s certified professional instructors will provide you with the knowledge and experience to confidently enjoy your own paddling excursions. FortWhyte’s small sheltered lakes are the ideal setting for learning the basics of these adventurous pursuits.

Instruction is provided for ages 12 and up.

All Courses Include:

  • National certification and registration with Paddle Canada for certification level courses
  • Entry to FortWhyte Alive Outdoor Adventure Centre
  • Liability and Activity insurance
  • Watercraft rental

Please bring:

  • PFD (personal flotation device), or they will be provided by FortWhyte Alive.
  • Paddle clothing suitable to the weather conditions.
  • Water/snack/lunch

Please note:

  • Due to tighter monitoring of our lake water quality, we no longer allow personal watercraft or paddles to be used on site.

All paddling courses are taught at the FortWhyte Outdoor Adventure Centre located at 2505 McGillivray Blvd.

This course is the foundation for any new paddler or those wishing to develop solid technique and skills. We will teach the fundamental canoe skills necessary to have a ton of fun out in the wilderness. An emphasis will be placed on safety and increasing overall general knowledge of the sport. This course will also build your confidence in paddling and tripping in the wilderness.

  • $125 per person
