Bison Butte Recreational Trails

FortWhyte Alive’s Bison Butte Recreational Trails are built for multi-purpose use.

FortWhyte is proud to be the site of Bison Butte – a major legacy venue from the 2017 Canada Summer Games mountain biking competition.

Located on the northern portion of our property the trails at Bison Butte are suited to all manner of recreational usage.

Cost

Access to our trails is included with general admission and is free for FortWhyte Alive members.

If you create zero emissions to get to our site via foot or bike, your admission is free.

Good to know

It is important that users are aware that not all the trails at Bison Butte are suited for all users. Trails are marked according to the skill and fitness level required to safely use the trail. Please refer to the following when choosing which trails are suited to your abilities

  • The trails are open to the public, free of charge, for multi-purpose use.
  • Motorized vehicles are prohibited.
  • Users must stay on the marked trails and follow all posted rules, including directional signage.
  • Unmarked areas are not maintained and may contain hidden or unknown hazards.
  • Anyone leaving the marked trails is a trespasser and willingly assumes all risks.

The occupiers owe no duty of care towards anyone on the recreational trails, other than not to create a danger with deliberate intent of doing harm or damage to the person or the person’s property; and not to act with reckless disregard of the presence of the person or the person’s property. The occupiers rely on s.3(4.1) of the Occupiers’ Liability Act.

Other

  • For cyclists: Helmet use is mandatory. Mountain bikes in good working order and with off-road tires are recommended.
  • For the best trail experience and safety, obey the directional signs.
  • If you are tired, rest. Inspect and respect the conditions.
  • Know your limits and ride (or walk) within them.
  • Control your speed and stay safe!

It is important that users are aware that not all the trails at Bison Butte are suited for all users. Trails are marked according to the skill and fitness level required to safely use the trail. Please refer to the following when choosing which trails are suited to your abilities

When choosing which trails to go on you need to consider:

  • Your skill and fitness levels required to stay safe and enjoy your experience.
  • If you are new to mountain biking, be aware of the higher demands of these trails and ride within your ability.
  • Other factors such as trail conditions, fatigue, weather, peer pressure, and equipment can change and increase the difficulty rating of a trail quickly and dramatically.
