Adapt or Die

 

Nature can seem wonderful, surprising, and strange, thanks to the amazing ways that living things are able to survive. Learn how the plants and animals around us use physical and behavioural adaptations to find food, shelter, water, air and space, and how you can help provide habitat for critters of all kinds.

GRADE 4 & 5

Due North: The Changing Arctic

 

Journey northward by snowshoe to a world of wonder and change. At our onsite Field Station, you will have the chance to think like Arctic scientists, discovering the effects of climate change on snow, the Arctic food chain, and Inuit communities with traditional knowledge of the land and ice. Get connected with ways to slow the change by reducing pollution closer to home.

*This program is offered Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays at our Siobhan Richardson Field Station. Outdoor time will be reduced during extreme weather.

GRADE 5

Weathering the Climate

 

Whether the weather is cloudy or clear, it's something we all have to face! Learn the difference between weather and climate, and use weather instruments to make a meteorological forecast, as you discover how weather and climate both affect our environment.

GRADE 6

A World of Difference

 

All living things have something in common, but the way they look, grow, and live can be wildly different! Explore the variety of life in the forests, wetlands, and grasslands of FortWhyte, using classification keys, nets and your own eyes and ears. Learn why biodiversity is important and ways to help protect it.

GRADE 6 & 7

Dynamic Diversity

 

Even in the smallest natural area, an incredible diversity of living and non-living things are constantly interacting. Take a closer look by completing an investigation of FortWhyte’s plants, animals, and soil. Learn about the importance of fire in maintaining diversity in the boreal forest, and how diversity keeps ecosystems strong.

GRADE 4-6

Late Fall Fur Trade Challenge

 

What is a hivernant? Do you have the guts to survive as a winter fur trader on the edge of the prairies? This adventure program incorporates elements of orienteering, historical fact, and a big bundle of fun! Roast bannock the old way - check your trapline, and see if you would have "wintered over" circa 1800.

Dates: November 12 - December 14
Fee: $6.50/student (minimum program fee $130.00)
Group Size: 40 - 60 students
Length: 2 hours

People of the Prairies

 

Follow in thousands of years of footsteps, hearing the stories of the Plains First Nations, the pioneers, and the Métis. Step inside a tipi and a sod house, discover useful wild plants, and re-create the early bison hunt by throwing an atlatl. See how our own lives connect with the past, and how life on the Prairies has changed over time.

Le Voyageur

 

“Welcome to the Northwest Company! Hard work, low pay, bad food, and thrilling adventure await you!” Get immersed in the life of a voyageur in the early 1800’s. Travel by land and voyageur canoe to trade for furs – will you find success and riches, or a cold, hungry winter? Voyageurs built this country – find out how firsthand!
