Gold Stars For 2017-2018!
FortWhyte Alive congratulates all staff and students who are taking their learning outside, and working hard to create greener schoolyards in Manitoba.
- Wolseley School, Winnipeg, MB: Wolseley School increased the amount of time they spent outside, and worked very hard as a staff to understand how they could facilitate genuine scientific inquiry and outdoor play with their students. During their “Week Without Walls” in June, authentic outdoor exploration of curriculum, and imaginative constructive play happened in new and exciting ways. This led to a greater community connection for students and staff.
- Steinbach Regional Secondary School, Steinbach, MB (Grade 10 Science): This group of educators from Steinbach Regional Secondary School have embraced outdoor curriculum-based learning at the nearby Tourond Creek Discovery Centre. Lessons about chemistry, meteorology, upland and freshwater ecology, and working towards research goals came to life on the land as these teachers facilitated outdoor sessions.
- Amber Trails School, Winnipeg, MB: This school has won awards for environmental design, and decided to take their “green commitment” further by taking a full day to learn about their neighbourhood ecology. This school’s commitment to place-based learning as a step to care and concern for the global ecosystem, fit with a reconciliation context, makes them a true Gold Star for the year.
- Honourable Mention: Nuiyak School, Sanikiliuaq, NU: This small community faced a number of issues in facilitating outdoor learning. Many Inuit traditions are in danger of being lost, and can be related and taught best outdoors. However, opportunities for outdoor learning were limited by teacher comfort; sending seven teachers to a multi-day workshop in Winnipeg resulted in increased time outside, increased learning outcomes (both curricular and cultural) and a greater sense of safety and adventure outdoors.
