FortWhyte 5: February Experiences

Winter 2017 has been unpredictable, at best– extreme winds, incredible snowfall, balmy January temperatures– even rain! While there’s no telling what February will have in store, you can always count on FortWhyte Alive as your destination for making the most of our wonderful winter days, no matter what the weather throws at us.

Join us to celebrate the coolest season around. Need a little inspiration? Check out what's on deck for February at FortWhyte Alive!

1. Take in breathtaking winter landscapes.

You don't have to drive hours outside of the city to experience this season's natural beauty! FortWhyte's urban wilderness setting is the perfect place to chart your own course this winter. Whether you head out on skis, snowshoes or simply on foot, our trails are open for exploration seven days a week. Make new discoveries, enjoy a quiet moment in nature, and snap some wildlife photos along the way. No matter which path you choose, you’ll experience something new each time you visit FortWhyte Alive.

2. Get your dose of adrenaline!

For those undeterred by the elements, check out the adrenaline pumping races we’ve got coming up this February. Challenge your new years’ fitness goals as you take on the Frozen Fiver, a 5/10 k race through FortWhyte’s frosty forest trails. Our Family Adventure Race, presenting by Ground UP - Adventures North, will get the whole family moving outdoors, navigating our rugged winter course, and having all the family fun. Check out this recap from last year for a taste of what you can expect!

3. Try something new.

Cabin fever? FortWhyte is the site to get outside and try something new this season. Cross an item off your bucket list as you learn to cross-country ski with FortWhyte's CANSI certified instructor Katrina. Tired of hot yoga? Try it on ice! Join in on our first winter outdoor yoga practice on Lake Devonian with lululemon ambassador Ash Bourgeois at FortWhyte's Fire + Ice Yoga Festival. If unbridled fun is the name of your game, hone your hucking skills at our Snowball Target Practice range!

4. Celebrate St. Valentine and Louis Riel

In our humble opinion, any visit to FortWhyte Alive would make the perfect date–but on February 14th, we're upping our game! Join us for our Valentine's Dinner at the Buffalo Stone Cafe by Diversity Foods. Enjoy three courses of fancy fare (complete with amuse bouche) amid FortWhyte's beautiful natural surroundings. And if you're really out to impress your mate, reserve a post-dinner Horse-Drawn Sleigh Ride. Cozy up as you travel down snowy lanes and enjoy a fire-side warm up with hot cocoa. Sounds magical, right?

FortWhyte Alive will be open on Louis Riel Day for voyageur games, bonfires and bannock, all free with admission. Honour the founder of our province by spending the day outdoors with family, celebrating all things Manitoban. Don't forget to sneak in a slide down the Richardson Rrrun!

5. If all else fails... prepare for spring.

If you're done with winter, we won't judge you. Luckily, we have just the thing for the cold weather blahs– our winter workshops at FortWhyte Farms will get you in the mood to grow! Warm up in our passive solar greenhouse and enjoy the smell of fresh soil, the ultimate sign of spring. We've got two opportunities to get gardening on your mind– our Growing Winter Greens workshop with Dave Hansen of Sage Garden Greenhouses, and Growing Indigenous Plants with Kelly Leask of Prairie Originals.
