FortWhyte Farms’ Campaign in support of its unique Youth Internship Program
Lend a hand.
Make a lasting impact on the lives of Winnipeg's most deserving youth. Support FortWhyte Farms' Youth Internship Program.
What is FortWhyte Farms’ Youth Internship Program?
Each summer, our social enterprise program provides full-time paid internships to 12 youth (aged 15-21) that experience multiple barriers to employment and education. This unique training and employment program goes beyond just caring for livestock and tending to vegetable gardens – interns get their hands dirty diving into personal and professional development, as well as community service projects.
Why is this internship important to Winnipeg's youth?
This program provides full-time employment and income to those who might not otherwise have the opportunity to work. It introduces youth to the practice of sustainable urban agriculture, provides access to high quality nutritious food, and teaches food preparation and cooking skills. Interns cultivate self-confidence, personal growth and leadership skills. For most graduates, their experience at FortWhyte Farms is a stepping stone in finding continued meaningful employment, and for some, in pursuing post-secondary education.
How can you help?
We were disappointed to learn that this year’s funding was approved for only four of our twelve interns, leaving us with a $25,000 shortfall and eight unfunded positions for deserving youth. We are now reaching out to the community to support this vital program. Together, we can secure the opportunity for these eight youth to work and grow on our farm this summer — but there are only two weeks to go before the interns are set to start.
