Sunset BBQ Champions: Oakley Optical

Posted on May 29, 2018

Staged outdoors on FortWhyte’s beautiful lakeside plaza, the Sunset BBQ stands out as our signature fundraiser. The Sunset BBQ has earned a reputation for its unforgettable prizes, relaxed vibe, and undeniably unique setting.

To celebrate the BBQ's 30th anniversary, we're chatting with some of our community champions. We would like to thank Oakley Optical for their longtime commitment to FortWhyte Alive! We asked them why they continue to support our endeavours.

Tell us a little about who you are.

Oakley Optical Eye Care was established in 1949 and has not stopped growing and caring for the vision needs of Winnipeg and surrounding areas. Started as a family business, Oakley remains under the leadership of David Oakley’s grandsons Bruce, Randy, Larry and Dr. Greg Hosegood. With three locations in Winnipeg, Oakley’s qualified and experienced doctors, opticians and staff bring fresh ideas to the table ensuring a continued strong presence in this community. As well as taking care of the vision needs in Winnipeg, Oakley actively supports the community, participating in many charity events and fundraisers.

Tell us a little bit about the Sunset BBQ.

The outdoor setting and the amazing food sets it apart from other fundraisers. I really enjoy seeing familiar faces year after year that are as excited about the event and supporting such a great cause as much as we are.

How long have you been involved with FortWhyte Alive?

We have been supporting FortWhyte for the last 10 years.

Why do you support FortWhyte Alive?

We’ve had the opportunity to spend a lot of time with our families at FortWhyte and it holds a special place in our hearts.

What else to do you appreciate about FortWhyte Alive?

We appreciate and enjoy the company of the FortWhyte staff and look forward to seeing them every year.
