Sunset BBQ Champions: The Thiessen Family

Staged outdoors on FortWhyte’s beautiful lakeside plaza, the Sunset BBQ stands out as our signature fundraiser. The Sunset BBQ has earned a reputation for its unforgettable prizes, relaxed vibe, and undeniably unique setting.

To celebrate the BBQ's 30th anniversary, we're chatting with some of our community champions. We caught up with the Theissen family to ask about their love for their community!

Tell us a little about who you are.

Brian and I have two kids, Peter, who is 14, and Anne, who is 11. As a family we are very active, we enjoy being outside and taking part in a healthy lifestyle. We are deeply rooted in our city and try to do our part to give back to our community.

Tell us a little bit about the Sunset BBQ. What sets it apart from other fundraising events?

We’ve been attending the Sunset BBQ for a number of years, and each year we look forward to it.  It’s not the typical event, it’s outside, the dinner is eaten at picnic tables and the food is spectacular!  The event showcases the place we are trying to bring awareness to. It’s a celebration of all that FortWhyte embodies.

How long have you been involved with FortWhyte Alive?

Brian is currently the Chair of the Board, and has served on the board for five years. Jen has been on the Sunset BBQ committee for two years.

Why do you support FortWhyte Alive?

Our family has enjoyed attending Fort Whyte for many years.  It’s a place that we’ve always loved to escape to.  Brian is currently the Chair of the Board, and has served on the board for 5 years. Jen has been on the Sunset BBQ committee for 2 years.

Join us for the 30th Sunset BBQ at FortWhyte Alive happening Wednesday, June 6, 2018. Get your tickets at fortwhyte.org/sunsetbbq.
