At FortWhyte Alive, our mission is to connect, and reconnect, people of all ages with the natural world, and to instill in them an awareness of their own role in sustaining it. Each year, we engage 30,000 students and 70,000 general public visitors in environmental and recreational programs that inspire them to care about our planet’s future.
FortWhyte exists because people like you have decided that clean air, diverse ecosystems, stable climates, and an educated and caring community, are vitally important. We invite you to explore this section to see how you can help FortWhyte continue to make a difference today, and in the future.
There are several unique and meaningful ways at FortWhyte to honour the memory of someone who was special to you:
The FortWhyte Forever Endowment is rooted in the understanding that a major cornerstone of a thriving future for FortWhyte Alive rests in the support and participation of individuals. It also recognizes that for many FortWhyte supporters, a tax-deductible charitable investment with lasting benefits for both the facility and the individual is most efficient and desirable. When a donation is made to the FortWhyte Forever Endowment, its impact lasts forever. All Endowment contributions are held in trust by The Winnipeg Foundation with the annual income supporting the work of FortWhyte Alive in perpetuity.
Planning a Gift to FortWhyte Alive
By partnering with financial specialists, lawyers and other allied professionals, FortWhyte Alive can assist donors in making the most effective use of their charitable contribution. Most (but not all) planned gifts are deferred gifts such as bequests, life insurance policies, charitable remainder trusts, gifts of residual interest, etc. Planned gifts may also include outright gifts in the form of securities, real estate or other gifts. A planned gift does not need to be large. Any gift to FortWhyte, large or small, is needed and will make a difference.
FortWhyte Farms' Growing Youth, Food & Community program (FWF) engages at-risk youth in hands-on urban agriculture using sustainable resources from FortWhyte’s land such as honey, bison meat and garden produce. FWF teaches practical work and social skills with the aim of helping participants gain economic self-sufficiency; encouraging a commitment to education and learning; and promoting respect for others and for the environment that sustains us all. Your contribution to FortWhyte Farms will enable us to continue to serve the young people most in need of its proven benefits.

Research into the increasing divide between youth and the natural world is revealing startling impacts on their social, psychological and physical development. This suggests that the need for outdoor education has never been greater. FortWhyte Alive has established itself as one of Canada’s pre-eminent outdoor education facilities, engaging 30,000 K – 12 students in hands-on experiential field programs each year. To ensure that our leading edge programs are affordable to all students, FortWhyte strives to cover the bulk of its program delivery costs by garnering support from the community.
Join FortWhyte’s Class Act Honour Roll today! By supporting the ’Class Act’ Campaign, you will help connect the leaders of tomorrow with nature, and help FortWhyte equip them with the skills and knowledge to face the complex environmental issues that lie ahead. For $200, you can sponsor one class field trip to FortWhyte Alive. Or for $500, you can sponsor an entire busload of children (3 classes)!

Our picnic tables are built out of treated cedar with iron bases. They are durable, but will be exposed to natural elements, pedestrian traffic, and other wear and tear. Picnic Table Tributes are provided for the natural life span of the picnic table (guaranteed minimum 10 years). FortWhyte Alive agrees to maintain all picnic tables against extreme weather damage and vandalism during this period. After that point, a renewed tribute will be offered to existing donors at 30% less the current requested donation. FortWhyte Alive will make all reasonable efforts to consult with the donor, family members or representatives prior to any such relocation or alteration.
When making a memoriam gift online, please use the comments box on the donation page for your tribute.
There are several ways to give to the FortWhyte Forever Endowment and, as a donor, you can choose the type of donation that best meets your financial needs and philanthropic goals. To make an outright, tax-deductible cash gift to the FortWhyte Alive Endowment Fund, contact the FortWhyte Alive Development Office. Whatever method you choose, you can be sure that your gift will last for generations and provide you with valuable tax savings.
Consider informing FortWhyte that you are planning a gift. This way, your generosity can be recognized immediately and we can provide you with specific opportunities for giving. Here are some ways to plan a gift to FortWhyte Alive:
- Establishing a Bequest in Your Will - Deferring your gift by making a personal legacy gift in your will is one of the simplest ways to express your enduring support to FortWhyte Alive. Your estate will receive a tax credit for the gift that could help reduce estate taxes owing.
- Gift of Securities - Publicly-traded securities are the most common form of non-cash gift and currently receive increased tax benefits. The value of the gift will be the fair market value as determined at the time the gift is received.
- Charitable Remainder Trusts - A charitable remainder trust is a deferred giving arrangement under which a donor transfers property (cash, securities or real estate) to a trustee. The donor retains the right to the income from the trust either for life or a specified term of years. Then, FortWhyte has irrevocable title to the assets when the donor dies.
- Gifts of Personal Property - Canada Revenue Agency calls a gift of personal property a gift-in-kind, and defines it as: a gift of property other than cash such as capital property (including depreciable property) and personal-use property (including listed personal property). A gift in kind does not include a gift of services.
- Life Insurance - Many donors have found life insurance to be a rewarding way of making a large future gift to FortWhyte, while providing tax credits that can be used now. Premiums that are paid on a donated life insurance policy are eligible for a charitable tax receipt. The payment of annual premiums is also a gift that generates an official receipt for income tax purposes. A tax receipt will be issued for the cash surrender value of the policy at the time of the donation.
Other types of planned gift include Charitable Gift Annuities, Gifts of Retirement Fund Accumulations and Gifts of Residual Interest.
The FortWhyte Legacy Society
Membership in the FortWhyte Legacy Society is open to anyone arranging a bequest to FortWhyte Alive or the FortWhyte Forever Endowment. The Society is a dedicated group of supporters who want to ensure that generations to come will have the educational advantage to address the environmental challenges of the future, and that everyone in our community will have access to natural settings and facilities for learning, health and enjoyment.
