We have been talking a lot about waste this month and we would like to give a special shout-out to some waste reduction champions!
These schools stepped up to our challenge – they participated in the TD Trash Can Jam Challenge!
FortWhyte is passionate about waste reduction and we want to encourage youth, as the environmental stewards of the future, to be more aware of the daily impact that they have on the earth. The average student produces up to 30 kilograms of waste per year! We are proud of the students from the following schools for learning about waste and making a difference.
These students committed to ‘low-waste’ lunches while on their field trip at FortWhyte Alive this past winter. Each school was to fill no more than a 5-litre pail with disposable lunch garbage, while everything else in their lunches was to be reusable, recyclable, compostable, or eaten! These champion schools rose to the task and each student was rewarded for their efforts with a free pass to FortWhyte Alive.
A big thank you to the students from:
- Calvin Christian School
- General Vanier School
- Governor Semple School
- Blumenort School
- Faith Academy
- Gillis School
- Lincoln Middle School
- Westview School
- Highbury School
- Linden Meadows School

- Prince Edward School
- Ecole Dieppe
- Grant Park High School

Congratulations to these schools for taking up the challenge this past winter and tackling their waste production head on!
The next step?
FortWhyte Alive field trips are going to be waste free by 2020! The Trash Can Jam is a great start, but we want to have all schools on board to help us reduce waste. If you are a teacher looking to bring your classroom, why not get involved while you can still win prizes?! Visit this page for more details about the program.
While this is a fun and important way for classrooms to reduce waste while on their field trip to FortWhyte, it would be even better if we could all cut down on the amount of trash we create each and every day. Let's all take the Trash Can Jam Challenge, shall we?
Teachers: Get Involved!
Step 1: Pre-register for the challenge by contacting the School Bookings office by phone: 204-989-8355 ext. 206, or by email at [email protected].
Step 2: Complete the challenge! All disposable lunch garbage produced by your group must fit into the provided 5-litre pail (per 30 students).
Visit this page for more details about the rules, as well as resources to help you complete the challenge.
Don't forget to use the hashtag #TDTrashCanJam to boast your student's waste reduction success at both FortWhyte Alive, and in the classroom!
