Staged outdoors on FortWhyte’s beautiful lakeside plaza, the Sunset BBQ stands out as our signature fundraiser. The Sunset BBQ has earned a reputation for its unforgettable prizes, relaxed vibe, and undeniably unique setting.
To celebrate the BBQ's 30th anniversary, we're chatting with some of our community champions. We caught up with Dawn Fraser from Lafarge Canada to talk about their community priorities.
Lafarge Canada has been involved with FortWhyte Alive since its very beginnings, which can be traced back to a handful of plant employees, (starting with Don Muir for whom one of the lakes is named after). Realizing the importance and opportunity of the old cement clay pits that are now the FortWhyte Alive lakes, they helped in creating a nature preserve and learning habitat near the city which evolved into FWA. We have enjoyed continuing to support the evolution and growth of FWA over the 50+ years and have marveled and been humbled by all Bill Elliot and his staff and volunteer team have managed to accomplish. It is important to Lafarge to support FWA’s goals and achievements to help leave a legacy of improvement to build a better city which includes access to green spaces, supporting biodiversity, nature access and education for city kids who don’t always get that chance.
While we continue to annually support FWA team with a donation for their volunteer program, we also love supporting their overarching goals by attending the Sunset BBQ every year. It is always an amazing evening with great company, food and almost always perfect weather to kick off the summer. The fundraising portions of the evening are always creative and entertaining, which all around creates a special recipe and keeps us coming back every year!
